A successful on line presence demands a web hosting company that is reliable.

You cannot deny the fact, that for your on line presence depends on your web hosting.  The accessibility your site is a must.  If this is not one of your main concerns then be ready to loose clients and also prospects.

Types of web hosting

You should choose a web host depending on your requirements for your site.  If your site is just for your hobby or you just want to share pictures with family members then a free host might be the way to go.  Your ISP usually give web space as a part of their deals.  However if you are a business user then this should not be your choice, as the old saying goes you get what you pay for and in the web hosting area that is absolutely  true.

There are several  types of hosting.

You will not be able to fulfill your requirements for your site using a hosting package that is aimend at a personal hosting package.

There are several  types of web hosting that we will now take a look at.

Virtual (shared) hosting

This describes a service where there are many web sites on one server and each site sits on its own part of a drive and is kept separate from other sites on the same disk.  This is a very common type of hosting and is also the cheapest

Dedicated server

This is a service where you rent the server and is not shared by anyone else.  This offers a very flexible  way to host your site.  It allows you to have full control over the server form the hardware to the types of software installed.  The administration of the server are usually provided by the hosting company as an add on service.  At times this can provide lower overheads and a larger return.  These servers are generally stored in data centers.  These center provide a backup power system and air conditioning they also take measures against fire and floods.

Collocation server

This is where you supply your own server or servers in a data center.  You will also be responseable for both hardware and software.  You will lease the rackspace for the server and the company will only be responseable for Internet connection.

Reseller hosting

This is where you rent web space from a hosting company and resell it to your clients.  If you have quite a few site online this could be a cheap option.  The hosting company will take care of the server and also the software.  In most cases you will need to deal with customer problems.
